Approximately, 44% of all undergraduate college students are enrolled at a community college. The community college offers students the opportunity to prepare for transfer to a four-year college or university, save money and take advantage of a flexible schedule. It serves an extremely important function that faculty often take for granted or don’t fully understand.
This topic will examine the role and functions that community colleges serve for post secondary students as they transition from secondary education programs to traditional four-year colleges and universities.
Furthermore, community colleges help students construct foundations upon which major areas of study evolve as the primary foci of the subsequent four-year bachelor’s degree.
Perhaps most important, from an instructional and learning perspective, it behooves faculty at respective four-year programs to understand and aptly capitalize the demographics, learning characteristics, and attributes of students they will instruct and advise.
